Why we built Velai
I was 13 when my family came to Germany from Sri Lanka. We didn't speak the language. Nobody told us which office came first, which form mattered, or who to trust. My parents figured it out the hard way, one closed door at a time.
Today I run an engineering company in Villingen-Schwenningen with two partners who made the same journey at the same age. We build automation for German manufacturers, and like every company here, we struggled to hire good engineers.
When we looked to India, we met brilliant people. And we watched them get lost: between agents who promised everything, fees nobody explained, and paperwork nobody walked them through.
Velai is what my family didn't have. One honest process. One person who answers you. And the truth about what's possible, including when the answer is “not yet”.

Kilum is founded
An engineering office for automation in Villingen-Schwenningen, in the Black Forest.
2019
Three partners take over
The three managing directors buy the engineering office and run it as owners.
2025
Kilum acquires ASE GmbH
Kilum takes over ASE GmbH of Neckarsulm, founded in 1995, as part of a succession.
What Kilum does
Custom automation for German manufacturers: robotic systems, conveyor and handling technology, special-purpose machinery and industrial IT. Its customers work in automotive, medical technology, plastics and building technology.
Why an engineering company runs Velai
Kilum hires engineers and knows how hard it is to find them. Velai exists because the people building it have been on both sides: arriving in Germany, and waiting for a hire.
